Mark and Michelle Vander Pol in Malawi | July 1-July 7 - In Nkhoma
Here is a picture of Michelle teaching one of her sections of Standard 6 English. Some of the classrooms had desks, but obviously this one did not! They had a standard English textbook for all Malawian schoolchildren which Michelle used (and even had to correct every once in a while!).
Here is a photo of Mark teaching one of his classes.
After school (school goes from 7:30~1:30) quite often the children were seen working. Here are some boys gathering firewood (for cooking).
We found a little frisbee and played with some of the children. Unfortunately it was a really hard frisbee to throw, but we had fun!
This is a group from South Africa staying at the Guest House. They gave us a Fourth of July Party! It was so much fun to have them help us celebrate our Independence Day!
And what better food to have on the Fourth of July than hot-dogs!! They got some sausages from Lilongwe and had the worker at the Guest House bake some rolls in the shape of bananas! The rolls were amazing, the "sausages" very tasty, and there was even home-made mustard! Throw in some fireworks and it would have been like we were in the States!
One of the sections Michelle taught had their classroom in a storage room.
Another section of Standard 6.
All the Standard 6 teachers. Michelle's cooperating teacher was the gentleman in the white jacket in the middle.
The third and final section.
Friday, July 6 was Malawi's Independence Day, so there was no school. Since Michelle was leaving on the next Monday, the school held a small assembly to say good-bye. Even though this was a holiday there were a good number of kids who showed up! They presented Michelle with the cloth to make a wrap-skirt and a top which she is wearing in this photo. We also presented all the children there with pens since they don't have enough to all have one.
Michelle went on a walk one afternoon and met some children meeting at the church.
There was a group of medical students from Ireland staying in Nkhoma who we became friends with. On the left is Patrick and on the right is Eimir (in the middle is Steve Roberts).
